Creativity is MagicalSidney Mohede Portraits by Fen
Creativity is magical, but it is not magic. “
These are the words of Charles Limb, a doctor and a musician who researches the way musical creativity works in the brain. I have found that many people in the world think of creativity as a ‘flash of genius’ that happens only to the gifted and the chosen few. But as the quote above states, there is no ‘magic’ involved. We are all creative in our own ways, and it is not reserved to only the chosen few.
I have been a songwriter for quite a long time now. When I was 15, I had an assignment to write a song. The song was this 3-piece stanza, not even a verse or chorus, just lyrical melodies that was pure nonsense trying to sound poetic. It was a complete disaster and sounded horrible. I literally did not try to write another song for a good 10 years after that. You see, I did not become a songwriter by choice, but only because the primary songwriter in the group left us, and I was given the task to ‘be creative and write’ just because the band thought there was no one else who could do it. And the rest was history.
Don’t get me wrong; I absolutely love what I do. Today, 25 years after I wrote my first song (and hundreds of published/recorded songs later), I am actually now feeling comfortable being called a ‘songwriter’. The famous French artist Edgar Degas once said, “Everyone has talent at 25. The difficulty is to have it at 50.” (or in my case, 40. Ha!)
So here’s the lesson I have observed. What people call ‘talent’ is simply the capacity and discipline for doing continuous work in the right way. Because beyond the talent and creativity lie all the usual words: discipline, passion, love, luck – but most of all, it is endurance. It takes hard work to be creative, not magic. So keep mastering your craft whether it’s photography, painting, medicine, education, programming, singing or songwriting. Then pour all our heart and soul and passion what we do, for we are shaped and fashion by what we love. Trust me, creativity is magical indeed.
