You know you have an atypical client when they want to do a shoot in Sydney but not at the usual locations. They actually didn’t want the photos to look like it was taken in Sydney! They prefer the road less traveled. This might sound strange to most people but Erwin and Velly are definitely not the common couple, and I very much welcome their adventurous spirit.
They want uniqueness? They got it! I came up with what looked like a grueling itinerary: hours of driving (immediately after a long flight into Sydney), shooting in the desert, changing hotels etc. And they brushed these all off like it was nothing, putting their complete trust in me that I know what is best.
On our first day of shoot, I took them to a spit in Port Stephens as our first location. The spit looks pretty close from the carpark, but when we started walking towards it, it felt really far! When we finally did reach the spit, the tide was actually not low enough to see its appearance. This is where I appreciate clients like Erwin and Velly. Instead of being sour or angry, they kept their positive attitudes and did not let this ruin their day. After another long walk
back to our car, we drove to Anna Bay where we traded our minivan to a 4WD to get into the desert. We were an hour drive into the dunes when we realized we brought everything we needed but water. I watched enough “Man VS Wild” to know that we just made a big booboo! There are
no stores or toilets inside the desert. We shared a small bottle of mineral water the whole five hours we were there. Even though we were clearly dehydrated, plus a good dose of sunburn to go along, we were having a jolly good time.
Thanks guys for such a memorable trip and shoot! To quote a Diesel ad,“Smart has the plans, but stupid has the stories.”
Love you guys!
Cheers,
Dre
